There are a lot of conjunctions in the English language! They can be used in 3 different ways. There are coordinating, subordinating, and correlative conjunctions. Remember that conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses!

Coordinating

  • For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Subordinating

  • after, although, as, as if, as long as, as much as, as soon as, as though

  • because, before, by the time

  • even if, even though

  •  if, in order that, in case

  • lest

  • once, only if

  • provided that

  • since, so that

  • than, that, though, till

  • unless, until

  • when, whenever, where, wherever, while

Correlative

  • both...and

  • either...or

  • neither...nor

  • not only...but also

  • whether...or

See the examples below:

  1. Watching sports is fun AND captivating. This is a coordinating conjunction because we are connecting the two words, “fun and captivating.”

  2. I don’t want to go UNLESS you are going. This is a subordinating conjunction because we are connecting the dependent clause (“unless you are going”) to the independent clause (“I don’t want to go”).

  3. NOT ONLY was it busy, BUT ALSO freezing. This is a correlative conjunction because it connected two phrases using pairs (“not only… but also”).
